You may have heard that during a past digital conference, Steve Jobs and Bill Gates shared the stage during a joint interview.
Many electronic pundits had covered the event and after reading the articles, it sounded like fireworks occurred on stage. If only I could have seen it, I thought.
During a tour of the iTunes Store the other day, I was excited to learn the 90-minute interview was available in either audio or video download.
As I watched these two titans of business, I saw two men, with a lot of history; demonstrate mutual respect for each other. The interview was fascinating to me.
How often do you get to listen in and watch them process their answers? And what insights they shared.
The highlight for me (other then the comments about Apple’s commercials early on) was near the end when audience members were able to ask questions.
What is Bill Gates Passion
There were two different questions; one about Bill Gates and how he felt about his legacy and the other soliciting advice for a fairly small (100 person) company.
Regardless of the generous contribution to philanthropy that Bill Gates has already made and the vast amount still to be made by him, he wants to be remembered for his work on the computer.
He says that he still eats, breathes and is obsessed with software. That’s what he thinks about, that’s what gets him excited.
What is Steve Jobs Passion
Steve Jobs followed up with advice to the small company that passion is essential to success.
As he said, building a business (making money) is hard sometimes. There are insurmountable barriers that require perseverance to overcome.
If you’re not passionate about what you’re doing, you’ll simply quit and move onto something a little more appealing, failing to achieve the success you seek.
Passion Gives Them Energy
Both Steve and Bill affirmed their passion and how it drives them. Neither man has needed to worry about money since they were in their early 20′s, but they have continued to grow and thrive because they are intensely interested in, passionate about and excited by what they do everyday.
How would you feel with this kind of fire in your belly?
Do you have it now?
Could you imagine having that kind of interest and excitement?

Great stuff David and enormously relevant. One of my main tasks in my consulting business is to help cafe and restaurant owners make more money in their business. To help them grasp that their business isn’t a hobby but that’s it is actually a business like any other and needs to be treated as such.
The big proviso always is that this ethos needs to be driven by passion. Passion for great food, great service and for producing something that people will rave about. Any business is always a balance between many factors but ultimately it can never really last unless there is passion as a driving force. It’s passion that wakes you up early, keeps you late at night and relentlessly keeps you thinking “I wonder if…” when you are thinking about your business.
Incidentally the Steve Jobs Stanford address which was originally only available on Itunes has made it’s way onto Youtube and I recently did a post about this in relation to my golf project. It’s a fantastic and inspiring address and deals with many of the same issues.

I heard today that Steve Jobs is taking his third medical leave!! So he can focus on his health. Is this the end of the Apple empire? The stock exchange of Frankfurt responded with a share value which was 7% down! I am curious Apple share’s will do tomorrow at the NYE
