It’s been a busy week getting ready for a new product launch… while limping around the with sore legs from my race.
[Click here if you missed my recap]
Lucky for me that I get energized helping the “Free Agent” achieve their goal of independence. There’s nothing more satisfying than hanging up the phone, knowing I’ve made a difference.
… of course, it’s not all peaches and cream. I get lots of questions from readers, clients… and even some passers-by (but that was for directions).
To handle your requests, I’m going to start dedicating Friday emails to responding to the questions you have.
Questions come down to a fee key areas:
1. Finding prospective clients online
2. Finding prospective clients offline
3. Mindset
4. Marketing
Q from John: “I know what I want to offer to clients. I think they all need [my services] but I haven’t gotten any new clients in over a month… Help”
Response: This is an issue I see often. Having so much desire to help people and make a difference. First, kudos for wanting to help others, the world’s a better place.
Understand that just because you “have it” doesn’t mean someone else “wants it.” You may have the best widget in the world – and nobody cares.
Tough words perhaps, but that’s reality – as evidenced by the lack of response.
Now, here are some steps to take…
Step 1: What is the problem you are the solution for?
- Notice I said ‘problem’ and not “what do you want to do…”
If you can’t answer this question in 1-2 sentences, rethink your offer. If you have to educate me for 5 minutes about an issue first, rethink your offer.
Step 2: Is there a current need?
- You might have the most advanced robot to go out and retrieve mail from the mailbox (it’s a need), but are people actively looking for such a solution, and are they willing to pay thousands for such a device.
There are some quick ways to determine the need:
Step 3: Check Google (search and keyword tool)
- what keywords are people using to search for something like you have to offer.
- are there many searches (over 10,000 per month) or a few, like 75 per month
- are there other sites offering something similar?
Step 4: Ask for feedback from associates who are/might be potential clients.
- Do they understand what you just said, do they relate to the issue, can they recommend a different message?
Step 5: Check Clickbank to see comparable products or services… and their gravity rating.
Wrap-Up:
You might feel you have the greatest product or service and it has the potential to change the world if enough people experience it.
However, if no one is actively searching for, or even realize they need your product, than you have the bankrupting task of educating them first… and that doesn’t work out too well.

Hi David,
I feel like you still haven’t answered John’s question. I’ve heard all the answers before… and then WHAT?
So I’ve found the right keywords, changed my website and I’ve checked with my associates that my pitch is right and understood and all that and then what?
Where do I go with this?
I use networking meetings but there’s only so many days and meetings to go to. What else other than having a great website? Are there any other good leads or tips you can offer?
Am I the devil’s advocate?
Curious to hear your answer.
Much love,
Beatrice

Beatrice, great question.
Correct and continue. Meaning, receive the feedback and adjust accordingly.
Regarding your website. What are your new conversion rates since your shift? Are you even tracking?
What are you offering, have you experimented with different offers? Different pitches?
If you’re not getting results from networking groups, have you tried different groups?
For instance, have you identified your ideal client? If so, have you gone to them?
If yes, and what you have offered didn’t work, did you try something else?
Finally, have you studied others doing the same thing but getting better results? What are they doing that you’re not?
These are just some of the areas I help clients work on, and there’s a lot more.
If you get into the habit of tracking and measuring your efforts, you’ll find good information from which to make better decisions.
And no, you’re not being a devil’s advocate, you’re asking good questions, that’s an important step.

David,
I am launching my motivational speaking career and desire to attract corporate clients with their self-discovery, self-improvement, and self-mastery. As a Colonel, my systems showed people and groups how to change the way they looked at things and the things they looked at changed. You can not solve problems from the same level of thinking that caused them. How do I attract clients that are ready to think differently?

Colonel Joe,
Great question. It sounds like you’re leading with what they “should” know and be doing. But before that, what’s their “need?” What is the problem, that they are experiencing and can relate to, that your services are the solution for.
I understand the philosophical approach and its value. But, you can’t lead with that, you need to lead with a problem that you help alleviate. And with corporate, it’s best to monetize the pain. i.e. “poor leadership is costing you $X per employee, I help companies save X% or $X by reducing turnover and increasing productivity?”
So, what you’re teaching is powerful, you can lead with that. If you want to lead with that, it’s an entirely different crowd.
