Flying First Class-Warfare

“Now boarding those needing assistance and our first class customers”

I excused myself from the conversation, got up and walked toward the attendant taking tickets.

“It must be nice,” she said to her friend thinking I was out of earshot.

Funny, for 10 minutes we were enjoying a nice conversation and I was listening as she shared her weekend exploits in LA.  But the moment she realized I was sitting in first class, I heard the tone in her voice change from friendly to almost…angry.

It Must Be Nice

Yes, it is nice to sit in first class, have more legroom and be waited on.

I experience a certain mindset shift.  I feel more successful and deserving.  I feel like I’ve “made it” and act accordingly.  Somehow, when I fly coach, I feel, dare I say “ordinary.”

And really, I don’t want to feel ordinary.  I want to feel extraordinary.  I think I’m unique and believe every person is unique… and extraordinary.

If It Were Up to Me

To me, flying first class is not about comparing myself to others, but about feeling more confident in me.  If it was up to me, we’d all fly first class, have extra legroom and be treated like rock stars.

Besides, knowing how hard you may be on your self, flying first class would act like a welcome relief from the grief you give your self.

If you haven’t done so, give it a try and pay attention to how you feel.

My angry friend would probably get angrier if she knew I only paid $50 more for my ticket.

David

PS – Do you have an interesting First Class experience?

The last time I flew, I had gone to help my Mom at a convention in California. My Mom noticed that the ticket clerk had a bracelet on that said “Recovering Drug Addict”. She quietly asked him, “So how’s that going for you?” Her interest in his life ended up with both of our tickets being upgraded to first class without so much as asking!

My son and I were flying to visit family the Friday night before Easter, no rush, no hurry to get there. When they called for volunteers to give up seats that night and be willing to wait until mid-day Saturday to continue the journey, I jumped. What my son, age 15, didn’t know was that they not only gave us a hotel overnight and meal money, they rebooked us First Class. It was wonderful to see his face when we got into our seats. Better yet, he now knows what it feels like when you get the best you deserve in life.

Yup, nothing like first class! Even the curtain between first class and business and/or the “cattle car” section pronounces a certain separation. Having been through all sections, nothing compares to the little more that is bestowed upon you when flying first class. Ever notice how most first class pax do not look at the pax who pass by on the way to the rear section? The envious look that you get? Yup, that’s the part that can be just a tad uncomfortable until you remember – I deserve this! It’s ok, I can deal with this!

some years ago I and my best friend gerry decided to go to puerto rico for vacation because we never had taken a real one before. money was always the problem and on this vacation it still was. We had not that cash but thought we would put every thing on a credt card. but when we got to condado, the questhouse owner wanted cash. we were reduced to poverty the first day. to make a long short. we did have a frugal but good time. We were supposed to stay 5 days but decided to go home in three. we called the airlines to change flights but they only had ist class. However, they took credit cards. So we flew home to ny 1st class. it was the best experience of my life. we had two attendants who treated us better than royalty-they treated us like their own family and although it was obvious there were some big wigs on board , they gave us so much attention and fun that the fight back was better than the whole vacation. To this day we say
!st Class is the only way to go -thanks- phil

I agree with you. We all deserve to fly 1st class. I used to fly 1st class when I was younger because I flew standby (free) and the 1st class seats were the only ones left. Now-a-days, 1st class is not that much more expensive than many coach fares … and don’t we deserve it? People should be kinder to themselves. We have a tendency to treat complete strangers better than we treat ourselves! We live with ourselves every day, we are all we really have, we should be kinder to ourselves.

Of course, we deserve and should earn “First Class” treatment in all areas of our lives.

What I am most fascinated by is the reaction of your conversational partner. The obvious envy and dismissive sarcasm point to a bigger problem in our society. Instead of “how wonderful!” many people are now conditioned to put down those who have made the effort required to go “first class.”

Thanks for sharing this David. It’s a positive conversation we all benefit from.

Thanks for the story David. We were flying last summer to So. America, and because we were on a mission with great purpose, the Creator had us moved to First Class on 3 different flights. My husband kept saying “Are you sure you didn’t buy all First Class?” I had not because of the cost, and never had experienced all those feelings you are talking about. It felt great. We were so comfortable and felt so special. Our hotels kept giving us suites that were economically priced – big and beautiful. It was WOW to see what happens when you follow your heart – miracles.
How do you get First Class on purpose so cheaply? You have me curious. Teresa
