I was speaking to a friend the other day about one of the traits we felt helped us achieve the outrageous success we both enjoyed.
Now granted, you probably could list a bunch of traits (or characteristics) that lead to success, and you would be right.
We’re talking about something that really stood out in our minds as a critical difference.
We both agreed this trait is one of the most important, without it, we would never have achieved our current level of success.
(Just an FYI – He earns a little over $1 million per year – and growing)
You may have heard this before and even demonstrated this trait from time to time.
What I’m describing is the ability to relentlessly pursue your desired outcome.
The word is “Perseverance” or the trait of “Persistence.”
We can see the roots of the word/trait go back thousands of years. From the Latin, it means to continue steadfastly, to come to a stand. It’s characterized now as a refusal to stop or give up.
As an Ironman Triathlete, I admire this trait in the participants who crawl to the finish line or walk through incredible pain, rather then quit.
In business, I see it in the ability to make prospecting calls after countless rejection until success is achieved.
As a parent, I see it in my wife’s ability to love and nurture our children even when stretched to the limits of endurance.
It’s the trait that helped me pursue my early dream of serving eight years in US Marine Corps Special Forces. I can tell you, duringsome of the intense training; my ability to persevere kept me going and kept me alive.
In building my first multi-million dollar business, it empowered me to chase a prospect for 18 months until they signed on… the invoice for the first month of service was $150,000!
But what does it take to persevere?
Could you imagine applying this amount of energy toward something you dislike?
Remember those times you persevered. Chances are, you did so during something very important to you. It certainly wasn’t a “should” or “supposed to” but something that inspired you.
You already know this, but success requires perseverance. To me, it’s one of the most essential traits of a successful person, to be able to continue on, despite adversity and set-backs.
So, what does it take to persevere? As mentioned previously, it requires inspiration. From my experience, if you’re not inspired (meaning ‘infused with spirit’) you don’t have much chance of persevering.
You may have read that to persevere, you need desire, self-discipline and focus. These are all important for sure, but you only need to focus on these traits if inspiration is missing.
Think about it, when you’re inspired to act (really inspired to act) then you already have the desire, you already have control over yourself (self-discipline) and inspiration helps focus your energy.
