10 Perspectives on Building Your Practice
0 Comments | Posted by David Koons in How To Get Clients
Is building your practice your main priority or do you view it as an unfortunate necessity. Wouldn’t it be nice if you didn’t have to worry about such things? That’s what job is for. If you want to run your own business, you have to be the chief marketing officer.
Building your practice with energetic clients has to be Job #1. If not, chances are you’re spending much more time worrying about getting clients than actually serving them.
When I filled my coaching practice years ago in six months, I was frequently asked how I did it. I responded with the Full Practice Program which outlines my step-by-step approach to filling my practice so quickly.
One of the things I did to fill my practice was learn from others. I continue to stay up-to-date on the latest news, updates and view points of others.

Getting more clients is the most important activity of an Solopreneur or professional (doctor, lawyer, accountant). It’s the rare individual who’s not looking for more clients or otherwise trying to build their practice.
When I started coaching small business owners, I learned first hand the challenges of finding qualified prospects. Being lazy, I quickly studied those who had gone before me and built on their strategies.
Within 6 months I had a thriving practice with a waiting list. How I achieved this is the basis of the Full Practice Program. While I only work with clients of my choosing now, I still practice the same habits.
One of those habits is to stay on top of the latest news, information and viewpoints of others to expand awareness and understanding of the field. Here are a few articles to help you in your efforts.

PS – Share your experience in the comments section below…
Yesterday, you learned what NOT to do in your efforts to get more clients. If you missed it, go here now to ensure you’re not making the same mistakes.
Today is about doing the right things.

When getting clients, you want to make sure you know:
- How To Attract Ideal Clients – and not just any client…
- What to say and what not to say when you meet any prospect…
- The biggest mistake you’re making and how to avoid it…
- How to leverage YOU and spread the word of your services like a virus…
- How to teach others to drive enthusiastic prospects to you…
- A Selling technique that feels natural and effortless…
- Which networking events are effective and which ones to DROP immediately…
- Outside-the-box practice building strategies that your competition doesn’t know about…
- How to create that feeling of accomplishment when you’re no longer ‘struggling’ to find clients…
When you’re applying the above strategies, you’ll experience greater fulfillment and ease because it no longer feels like you’re working, just sharing with friends and making money as a result.
It’s why I created the Full Practice Program.

Yesterday you learned that it’s insane to do the same thing over and over again and expect a different result.
(Click here to read that article if you missed it)
Now it’s time to learn from my experience getting clients. In addition to filling my practice years ago, I interviewed many other successful practitioners. Before I tell you what I learned TO DO, let me tell you what NOT to do…

Don’t Re-Invent the Wheel
– Many of us have been there, done that – so you don’t have to. Really, do you want to spend months doing more research, finding the various strategies, boiling them down to your unique approach and then figuring out how to integrate them into a system that you ‘will’ follow every day?
Don’t Keep Doing What Doesn’t Work
– The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and getting a different result (we mentioned this earlier). To me, it’s ‘insane’ to keep doing what you’re doing if you’re struggling and worried about where your next client will come from.
Don’t Focus On You
– they don’t care what you know until they know that you care. Learning what to say and when is vital to enrolling new clients. How clear are you about whom you want to work with and what problem (of theirs) you’re the solution for? This is one of the biggest mistakes most people make.
Don’t “Wing It”
– It’s imperative to have a formal plan of action to keep you focused. In the Marines I was taught a simple credo; ‘fail to plan, plan to fail.’ Imagine getting in a car and driving without a map or specific destination. Sure, you know how to drive, turn the steering wheel, press the gas pedal and probably talk on the cell phone while you’re at it – but without any idea where you’re going, it might be a while before you get there.
Don’t Go It Alone
– Seems like so many coaches and consultants are trying to do it all themselves. When you spend so much time on the operations of your business, you become the master of operations – still looking for clients. When you follow a step-by-step system to build your practice, you become a master of getting clients – which would you rather be?
Don’t Think You’re Not Good Enough
– Whether you’re new to the field or someone who is incredibly hard on themselves (I bet you’re one of them) sometimes you can be your own worst critic. One thing I’ve learned over the years is that everyone – I’ll say that again, EVERYONE – has powerful life experience, both personal and professional, that can serve a lot people. – you are no exception.
Don’t Think Your Results Are Due To The Economy
– This is the first economic downturn and it’s not going to be the last. When you study history, you’ll learn some of the greatest fortunes were made or started during the worst economic times of their respective era.
Okay, I think you get what NOT to do, now you may be asking what TO do…
So be sure to check tomorrow’s article…

It’s Okay To Have An Unfair Advantage…

If you were a golfer, would you rather play when the course was packed and you had to wait at every tee before playing a hole?
Or would you rather tee up and go play while everyone else was out doing something else?
In these times, many people are running around crazy, while so many potential clients could use your expertise to navigate their way through.
Sure, you can sit down at your computer, and surf ways to find clients, keep hitting refresh on your email and checking voice mail to see if that person you gave a business card to yesterday is following up? And experience the disappointment that usually follows.
But that’s okay, you think, you brush yourself off and affirm in the mirror that you will attract that perfect client today, as you go through the same ritual as yesterday – you know, the one that didn’t help you find any clients either.
You try not to remind yourself that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result – but here you are at it again.
So, this can be a tough economic climate or it can be a tremendous opportunity. It’s up to you to decide whether to focus on the tough climate or the tremendous opportunity in front of you.
Because I understand, You Reap The Rewards…
Remember, I’ve lived that scenario and helped others break free of that cycle of disappointment. What I discovered early on in my efforts was that I could do the same thing as all the other broke coaches, and get the same results.
You see, I interviewed the unsuccessful along with the successful. I wanted to learn what they were doing.
Do you know what I learned NOT to do?
Good, then check back tomorrow to find out!
